Explosion in Horley causes injuries and power outage

Two people are injured after an explosion caused by a power surge in Horley, and a power outage is affecting local homes while investigations continue

Two people have been injured following an explosion believed to have been caused by a power surge in Cranbourne Close, Horley, on the evening of 20 May.

One person was taken to hospital with second-degree burns, while a second person received treatment from paramedics at the scene.

Surrey Police said they were called to the scene at around 10.20pm after reports of an explosion.

Officers attended alongside Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, who say they were called to Cranbourne Close, yesterday evening (Tuesday 20 May).

They were joined by a crew from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, we had one pump in attendance.

A spokesperson said: “We left the scene at approximately 23:33 that evening, once the incident was handed over to UK Power Networks.”

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: "Safety is our top priority and we were concerned to hear about an incident involving two customers last night (20 May) in Cranbourne Close, Horley. Investigations are ongoing. We are contacting the customers as a priority to offer any support we can."

The power surge also caused an outage affecting homes in the area, which UK Power Networks is currently working to resolve.

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) said they were called at approximately 10.15pm on 20 May to support Surrey Fire and Rescue Service following reports of the explosion.

Crews assessed and treated two patients at the scene.

One patient was taken to a local hospital for further treatment, while the second was discharged at the scene.
