Event in Aldershot taking place to celebrate Armed Forces Day
The Armed Forces Day 'Prom In The Park' is taking place in Princes Gardens
The town of Aldershot is celebrating Armed Forces Day with an event in Princes Gardens this Saturday.
The Armed Forces Day 'Prom In The Park' is taking place between 2pm and 5pm.
The afternoon’s festivities start at 2pm, when the bar and tea tent open, alongside free children’s crafty fun, a bouncy castle, face painting and community stalls.
Between 2pm and 3pm, dancers from Guildford Lindy will be hosting a fun Lindy Hop and dance workshop, accompanied by local vintage swing singer Helen Muggeridge.
At 3pm, the main Prom begins in the bandstand, with Rushmoor Concert Band, Farnborough Band of the Royal British Legion and local classical singer Toni Nunn, leading a toe-tapping concert of popular live music.
The prom will end in flag waving style with traditional Last Night of the Proms favourites, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and Land of Hope and Glory. There will also be a special interval musical performance and a thank you speech from Aldershot’s Garrison Commander.
Programmes and flags will be available to buy on the day from charity partners SSAFA.
Councillor Nem Thapa, the Cabinet Champion for Military at Rushmoor Borough Council, said "Aldershot town is historically known as the home of the British army. The Aldershot Garrison is located in the middle and occupies a large part of the borough.
"Armed Forces Day is a chance for individuals and organisations to show their support for all those who make up the armed forces community. From currently serving members, to serving families, veterans and cadets."
