People across Surrey and East Hampshire have been invited to gather by Epsom Clocktower to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

This marks 78 years since the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by the Red Army in 1945.

The council have arranged for the local landmark to light up purple in memory of all those that lost their lives in the genocide.

They say that this opportunity to stop and reflect on this tragedy and the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

A display on the history of the Holocaust is also on show at Bourne Hall.

Mayor of Epsom and Ewell Clive Woodbridge told us: "Sometimes this tragedy feels a bit distant, sometimes it feels like a far away place and a far away memory.

"So, I think we should spend time during this day to reflect and make sure we do our bit to make sure this never happens again.

"The memories of those lost should not be overshadowed - and they should never be forgotten.

"There was a slogan - 'Never Forget', but I think that perhaps this has got lost a bit because it keeps happening.

"We've got to keep reminding people of the horrors that took place here in the Holocaust so people understand its enormity.

"I hope that this will educate people enough so that they will do their bit and make sure this never happens again in our time."
