Surrey Police have been explaining why you should not let someone claiming to be from the water board into your home.

The main reason is there has not been a water board for over 30 years and this is actually a distraction technique used by burglars.

Officers say scammers will usually knock the door and claim to be there to fix a broken pipe or leak from a neighbouring property.

Once they have gained entry and been shown where the pipes are, the suspect will then distract the resident and steal items from the property.

Surrey Police have issued the following advice:

• If you have any doubts about a doorstep caller, don't let them in

• Water company officials do not need to access your home to test water pressure or repair a leak and if they do need to access your home, they will write to you to arrange a suitable appointment

• Ask to see their company identification card and ask for a contact number for their head office so you can confirm they are who they say they are

• Keep an eye out for vulnerable neighbours including the elderly and report any suspicions of bogus callers to police

• Never leave the front door open, close it if you need to go back into another room for any reason

• Think about installing a CCTV doorbell, especially if you care for a vulnerable person. That way, you will be alerted to anyone at the door and be able to speak to them, as well as recording the footage should you need to contact us

• If in doubt, keep them out
