With the third national lockdown underway, a Surrey charity is asking for volunteers to come forward as more vulnerable people isolate at home.

Crossroads, based in Leatherhead, provides respite breaks for unpaid carers.

It says demand for its services has increased, especially from those looking for companionship and extra assistance in the home.

The charity says it needs people to help with things like telephone befriending calls, shopping & prescription collections - and will provide the support necessary.

While Crossroads employees are caring in homes for those with the greatest needs, the charity says there are many more people - especially those who are older and living along - who are feeling worried and anxious, and cannot get out.

Volunteers help by regularly calling people, giving friendship and support.

This also includes helping with online support so peope can do a food shop or their banking. The charity says this helps support confidence and independent living.

Terry Hawkins, CEO of Crossroads Care Surrey said: "Whilst this is positive, we are overwhelmed with vulnerable people asking for help right now, particularly those seeking companionship and extra help in the home.

"We are looking for more volunteers to help with telephone befriending calls, shopping & prescription collections, and companionship with support in the home.

"We will offer each and every volunteer the right support for the role, including training to the same high standards as our paid caring employees in safeguarding policy, infection control and PPE to ensure the highest safety always."
