Covid marshals in Woking town centre
They have the authority to issue fines for breach of coronavirus regulations.
People in Woking are being asked to cooperate if they are approached by marshals ensuring coronavirus rules are being followed.
A trained team is now on duty in the town centre at peak times during the day and night - and have the authority to serve Fixed Penalty Notices for breach of the rules.
As well as checking social distancing, face covering and hand-washing guidelines are being followed, the Covid marshals will also provide help to businesses and advice on staying safe.
Cllr Ayesha Azad, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: "Our key priority is to continue to support residents and businesses and keep Woking Covid secure. I am immensely proud of Woking’s response to the pandemic and how hard officers, partners and venues worked to safely reopen Woking for business after lockdown.
"We have invested in equipping our Covid Marshals with the skills and knowledge they need to champion safe socialising. They will provide a reassuring presence in the town centre and I encourage you to look out for them and approach them if you need advice or assistance.
"For many, something previously simple, such as going to the shops, has become a daunting prospect and I look to everyone to play their part, be mindful of others and follow the guidelines that are in place to protect us, at all times.
"If you are approached by a Covid Marshal, please cooperate with their request and be respectful."
Meanwhile in Guildford, Covid marshals will be in the town centre from this Saturday (31 October) for four months.
