Rushmoor Borough Council have given the green light for construction work to start on the Union Yard scheme as part of the regeneration of Aldershot town centre.

The project will see 100 homes built in Union Street and the High Street, along with commercial units, “high quality container spaces” and student accommodation.

On Wednesday (28 July), Cabinet members formally agreed to proceed with the Union Yard redevelopment and to recommend that the budget be put in place to allow the scheme to press ahead.

A full meeting of the council approved the Cabinet’s recommendations on Thursday (29 July) evening.

The Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council, Councillor David Clifford, said: “Since 2016, our main focus has been on regeneration. Lots of people said it would be ten years before we assembled all the land we needed for this project. Five years on and we have acquired all the land we need and we are making the biggest investment ever in Aldershot, by this council.

“The scheme will be delivered in the next three years, and we are really excited about what is going in there. Our focus will be on attracting some quality independent businesses to Union Yard.”

Demolition and site clearance work on the site is already underway and is expected to be complete by September, with the build set to begin in the autumn.

Building work is expected to take around two and a half years to complete.
