Be green this Halloween: Surrey wildlife trust encouraging people to be sustainable this spooky season
They want people to avoid an 'environmental horror story'
Surrey Wildlife Trust are encouraging people to get sustainable this Halloween - as it's said millions of Pumpkins will go to waste this year and over seven million costumes will be thrown in the bin.
The trust are asking people to be green this Halloween by re-purposing old costumes, composting Pumpkins and buying second hand decorations.
Surrey Wildlife Trust’s outdoor learning manager, Louise Shorthose said: " After Halloween once you've got your lantern all finished with, you can either put it in your compost bin, or you can leave it out for animals.
But don't leave it on the ground, because it's a laxative for Hedgehogs. So raise it off the ground and then badgers, foxes, squirrels and birds can enjoy before you compost the rest of it."
According to Hubbub, around 40 million Pumpkins are bought every year and over half will go uneaten.
Louise also said: " 90 percent of each costume contains plastic or is made of plastic, so is a huge contributor to waste
probably the best thing you can do is go to a charity shop and buy some old clothes. So why not have a go at making your own costumes. The kids are off school so could be a good way to keep them busy."
