An airport in East Hampshire has revealed plans to build one of the largest light-weight solar installations in the South East.

Farnborough Airport say it will allow the airport to generate twenty five percent of its own power.

The installation will enable the Airport’s operational fleet of electric vehicles to be charged using self-generated electricity.

The plans will see solar panels mounted on Farnborough Airport’s curved hangar roofs.

Last year the airport committed to being net zero by 2030 or sooner for emissions it can control, and achieved Carbon Neutral 3+ status in 2018. It also began offering all customers Sustainable Aviation Fuel in 2021.

Colm Doherty, who's the head of the projects and planning team at Farnborough Airport, said "Sustainability is really dear to our hearts, we've been on a journey now for quite some time to look at how we can be more sustainable across the entire airport.

"With this installation and this phase of the installation, a quarter of the energy that we'll use every year will come from a renewable source. It won't be coming from the grid, it will be nice clean, green energy that we'll continue to produce as we go through our working lives here."
