Surrey County Council has received a £5.3 million grant from the Department of Work and Pensions to help vulnerable families and individuals during the winter.

It forms part of a new Housing Support Fund which aims to ease short-term financial pressure.

The government has given £421 million to local authorities, with Surrey's share of the grant to be distributed across the county's boroughs.

It means support will be given to help people buy food, clothing, fuel and other essentials.

Lead Councillor for Resources at Guildford Borough Council, Cllr Tim Anderson, said: "We have received almost £345,000 from Surrey County Council.

It's excellent that we have this money available to help our vulnerable residents.

We know how difficult these next few months can be with the cost of Christmas, the cold and wet weather, and the recent rise in fuel prices.

To apply you must be over 16, live in Guildford and be without sufficient resources to meet your immediate short-term needs.

We have been supporting our vulnerable residents and local businesses by providing grants throughout the pandemic."

Successful applicants will receive the grant directly in their bank account with the new grant available until the 31st March 2022.
