A windy start to the new year is expected for many in Suffolk today.

The Met Office yellow weather warning for wind is in place until 9pm today (Tuesday).

Gusts could reach 60mph in coastal areas or 40 to 50mph elsewhere.

The forecaster says the bad weather will likely cause some travel disruption, suggesting some bus and train services could be affected, and that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

Rain

Across the country, the Met Office has also issued a number of weather warnings for rain, although they don't currently cover Suffolk.

It says the heaviest rain is "more likely" across parts of Wales, the Midlands towards eastern England and Yorkshire.

It's also warned some travel disruption is likely as the heavy rain is set to fall on ground that is already saturated after recent wet weather.

Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey said: "At the moment it does look like a lot of that rain will push across the vast majority of England and Wales, turning widely wet once again throughout Tuesday."

There will also be a north-south contrast in temperatures ranging from between 8C to 13C but it will feel chillier in the wind and rain.
