Waveney MP Peter Aldous confirms he will stand at next general election
He's represented Lowestoft and the surrounding area since 2010
Waveney MP Peter Aldous has confirmed his intention to stand at the next election, even as the boundaries of his seat are set to shift.
Mr Aldous, who has represented Lowestoft, Beccles, Bungay and nearby villages since 2010, said he would be again standing as the Conservative candidate at the next election, expected to take place in 2024.
The Boundary Commission has recommended that his constituency be re-drawn in 2023 however, so that he would lose Bungay and the area south of the town.
Bungay would form part of a new ‘Waveney Valley’ constituency, along with Halesworth, Harleston, Diss and Eye.
It is not yet known who would stand for that new seat, if the commission’s recommendations are followed.
A career-long backbencher with relatively little UK-wide recognition, Mr Aldous came to national prominence in February this year when he became one of the first MPs to send a letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson, following the reports around ‘partygate’.
In 2019, Mr Aldous won his seat on its current boundaries with a large majority of 18,002.
The seat had previously been held by Labour from 1997 until 2010 – and some models suggest the party would win the seat back if an election were held tomorrow.
