Suffolk residents urged to look out for and report illegal dog breeding
The Environmental protection team at East Suffolk Council are working with Suffolk police to crackdown on unlicensed breeders

Residents and prospective pet owners are being urged to look out for illegal dog breeders and practices, as part of a new crackdown on unlicensed breeding.
On Thursday 30 September, the Environmental Protection team at East Suffolk Council, working with Suffolk Police made arrests at two locations in Leiston for unlicensed, and therefore illegal, dog breeding and/or sales of puppies under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
The arrests came following months of investigation and it is hoped that further arrests will be made in the coming weeks. Illegal dog breeding is often done in poor conditions and without the necessary care, putting at risk the life of the mother and its puppies.
Councillor James Mallinder is the cabinet member for the environment for East Suffolk Council. He says, " When you buy a new puppy, its such a joyous occasion for the household. The last thing you want is an ill dog with huge veterinary bills, and might ultimately pass away early. "
"So its very important that residents are careful about where they buy their dogs from and stay away from puppy breeders."
So what are the precautions to take before buying or adopting a dog. Councillor Mallinder says its important for prospective pet owners to do their research. "When you look for a puppy, you need to see a picture of the mother, as well as of the puppy with the mother. A good breeder will send you lots of pictures, videos and may even let you visit the mother and her litter", he says.
"Make sure you do your research, ask lots of questions and for lots of pictures", he adds.
Another sign to look out for, he says, is poor health. "You can contact your vet, or the RSPCA or dogs charities for more information and resources to see if your puppy is healthy and from the right source."
