SOS Bus confirms festive service after reaching fundraising target
They'll be out and about across Suffolk for those who need their help
A charity-run SOS Bus providing welfare support and first aid to people on nights out has confirmed it will operate across the festive period after successfully reaching its fundraising target.
The mobile service, which offers a safe and welcoming space for people who are vulnerable, unwell or in crisis, had faced the possibility of being taken off the road after a funding shortfall left it without essential vehicle insurance.
The charity needed around £5,000 to cover annual insurance costs, medical supplies, bottled water and fuel. Following an urgent appeal, organisers say the target has now been met, allowing the bus to return to service immediately.
The SOS Bus operates at night-time economy hotspots, providing first aid, welfare support and medical triage. Volunteers offer water, basic care and a place to rest, and only call ambulances when necessary, helping to reduce pressure on local emergency services and A&E departments.
Run entirely by trained volunteers, including first responders, the service has previously dealt with serious medical incidents, including heart-related emergencies requiring the use of a defibrillator.
In addition to supporting people on nights out, the SOS Bus also acts as a mobile safe space for those experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges or substance misuse, and provides signposting to local services and organisations.
The charity says the bus is more than just a vehicle, describing it as a lifeline for people who may otherwise have nowhere to turn. Volunteers are trained to listen, assist and guide individuals to appropriate help, offering reassurance and practical support when it is most needed.
With the festive period traditionally one of the busiest and riskiest times of year, organisers say being able to operate is crucial. The service is now confirmed to be running across the holidays, including pre-booked deployments in Ipswich.
The charity has thanked members of the public for their support, stressing that every donation has helped ensure the SOS Bus can continue operating at a time when demand for its services is typically high.
Residents are reminded to drink water regularly on nights out, look after one another, and seek help from welfare services or street pastors if needed. The SOS Bus encourages anyone interested in volunteering or supporting the service to get in touch.
