Risk of Tornados, 70mph wind and Thunderstorms across 260 miles of the UK

This is according to The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation

There is a risk of Tornados, 70mph wind and thunderstorms across 260 miles of the UK today and tomorrow. The warning came in at 4 am today. (30th December 2023)

According to The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) it will take place from 04:00 GMT Sat 30 Dec 2023 to 06:00 GMT Sun 31 Dec 2023.

Hazards

The hazards described by the TORRO include...

  • Wind gusts to 60-70mph
  • Hail
  • Occasional CG lightning
  • Isolated Tornadoes
  • TORRO defines a severe thunderstorm as producing one or more of the following:
  • one or more tornadoes and/or waterspouts
  • hail with a diameter of at least 20mm
  • non-tornadic winds gusting to 55 mph or more at the surface (but which are not part of synoptic-scale straight-line winds of such velocities)
  • Thunder/lightning does not necessarily need to be present for any of the conditions listed above to occur.

Places likely to be affected

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation said the locations that will be affected will include.

  • Central and Southern RoI
  • Wales
  • A Portion of North England
  • Midlands
  • East Anglia
  • South England
  • Channel Islands

What to Expect?

The Met Office are warning there may be delays to road, air, rail and ferry transport, as well as some bus and train services affected, causing delays and/or longer journeys

As well as likely "delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges."

They also believe coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by large waves and/or spray

The Met Office has also said there may be some "short term loss of power and other services is possible,"
