Controversial plans for a quarry expansion in a village have been deferred until next year.

On Tuesday, members of the county council’s development and regulation committee were due to discuss plans for the northern expansion of Lawn Farm Quarry, in Wetherden, south of Elmswell.

The plans, submitted by Aggmax Transport, attracted strong local opposition with 64 residents submitting a total of 274 comments and a public petition receiving 2,016 signatures.

However, Cllr Jenny Ceresa, the committee’s chairwoman, confirmed the discussion would not go ahead until February 4 due to parish councillors and residents not being notified about the meeting in advance.

A site inspection will take place on January 31.

The county council has received objections from Elmswell, Wetherden, Haughley and Woolpit parish councils.

A statement submitted by Elmswell Parish Council highlighted the ‘fraught relationship’ with the operator and stressed a lack of promise it could change.

The applicant argued the new development would be operated in much the same way as the existing quarry and unacceptable disturbance would be minimised.

Despite the objections, council officers had recommended the plans for approval.
