Suffolk's LGBTQ+ history explored in archive exhibition
The Pride in Suffolk's Past exhibition is on show until early July
LGBTQ+ history in Suffolk is being displayed in a new exhibition as museums reopen today (17 May).
Taking place at The Hold on Ipswich Waterfront, Pride in Suffolk's Past features original documents found in Suffolk Archives and local collections exploring the histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender non-conforming people in the area.
The free exhibition is open seven days a week until 4 July and is the result of a two-year project.
It's hoped the displays will teach people about the LGBTQ+ history in Suffolk and help influence members of the local community.
Emily Shepperson, Exhibition and Interpretation Officer for Suffolk Archives, said:
"One of the main things we've heard again and again is how important it can be to be sharing some of these LGBTQ+ historical stories. Individuals identifying in a range ways and living their own lives stretch right back through history, this isn't a modern thing, this isn't a new thing, perhaps some of the terminology is, but the histories and individuals going about their lives have a very long history.
"That can be really influential for people to learn about and experience today, perhaps they recognise something in somebody from the past or perhaps it helps them understand the experiences of a friend of family member."
Pride in Suffolk's Past is the result of a wider project forming part of Sharing Suffolk Stories, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Anne Jenkins, Director of England Midlands and East for National Lottery Heritage Fund, said:
"We are proud to support Suffolk Archives in preserving the hidden LGBTQ heritage of Suffolk. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, this history will now be shared with the wider community and will highlight the local people who have paved the way for social change."
A Pride in Suffolk's Past book has also been produced alongside the exhibition, featuring contributions shared by the LGBTQ+ community in Suffolk today.
