Around £12,000 has been stolen from an elderly woman during a distraction burglary in Haverhill earlier this week.

It happened in the Mill Hill area between 6pm and 6:20pm on Wednesday (November 30).

A man knocked on the woman's front door and asked to be let in, claiming to be from a water company and asking if she could turn her water off.

He then distracted her - asking her to clear out a cupboad in the kitchen - before taking two tins containing £4,000 and £8,000 in cash.

Nothing else was taken.

Police are urging people to be cautious about letting people into their homes, unless they are satisfied they are genuine.
