£100,000 has been spent on a project in Beccles aimed at preventing a repeat of major flooding around three years ago.

Many homes were damaged over the Christmas and New Years period in 2020 - with businesses like Beccles Lido also hit.

Anglian Water says its since worked out that heavy rain was causing issues with the town drain, leaving water without anywhere to go.

It has since worked to unblock the drain and carry out a series of repairs.

"First time we’ve worked directly with a town council on a scheme like this"

Jonathan Glerum is Anglian Water’s flood risk manager:

“Given the complexity of flooding in Beccles we have been working with partner organisations to investigate the drainage network as part of the wider improvements to help manage flood risk in the area.

"Ensuring that water can easily flow through ditches and watercourses helps protect the town from flooding, so it was important to support Beccles Town Council on this project.

"This was the first time we’ve worked directly with a town council on a scheme like this, and it’s a great example of how we intend to continue working across the region. Working together with partners and stakeholders we can make a bigger impact than any one organisation can alone.”

What happens now?

Beccles Town Council and Anglian Water say they will carry out regular maintenance, to ensure that the surface water drainage network continues to work effectively towards reducing flood risks.
