A fish and chips shop destroyed in a massive blaze has been given the go-ahead to be rebuilt.

Members of East Suffolk’s planning committee met yesterday afternoon to discuss the future of Sole Bay Fish Company’s restaurant in Blackshore Quay, Southwold.

The restaurant was consumed by flames in May last year due to several gas cylinders exploding and requiring firefighters from several crews across the county to put the blaze out.

Although the fish monger’s operations and takeaway sales were reestablished earlier this year, yesterday the company was seeking permission to rebuild the restaurant as it was before the fire.

The planning statement read: “Although (previous) planning approval offered help with the takeaway and restaurant, it has been decided that a fuller re-establishment of the building and business activity would be a more suitable solution, creating less disruption to the business and the local area, along with establishing a more suitable long-term outcome for all parties.

“The planning approval is important in creating a viable continuation of this very important business in the tourist location of Southwold.”

The application was approved unanimously and has been given a three year deadline as part of its conditions.
