Overnight closures in place on part of A14

Highways England has approached the halfway point of A14 upgrades during lockdown

Overnight closures will be in place on the A14 between Claydon and Copdock Interchange tonight (31 January) until Wednesday 3 February.

The stretch of road will be shut to allow a contraflow system to be switched from one side of the dual carriageway to the other.

It's part of works to carry out essential surface repairs while the national lockdown is underway and traffic levels are reduced.

According to Highways England the 24/7 contraflow system, which was introduced early this month, has reduced the time needed to complete works from nine weeks of weekday overnight closures to four weeks of work.

Karl Brooks, Highways England Programme Delivery Manager, said: "The A14 is a vital route that provides key access across the country, stretching from the East region’s ports to Leicestershire. It is used by more than 85,000 drivers every day, including more than 21,000 hauliers transporting essential goods around the country.

"As we reach the halfway point in the scheme we have already made a number of vital improvements to the westbound carriageway, which will mean smoother journeys for drivers going forward. We now turn our attention to the eastbound route where we’ll delivery similar upgrades to the road surface."

The contraflow system will see traffic diverted off the A14 at Claydon (junction 52) and onto the B1113, to then follow the B1113 onto Swan Hill, to then take Chapel Lane onto London Road and follow London Road to then take the A12 and re-join the A14 at junction 55.

Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion in reverse.
