A 42-year-old man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to being more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

Afoke Edematie, of Snowdrop Way, Bury St Edmunds appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 3 September, where he was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

Edematie had previously pleaded guilty to drink driving, using a motor vehicle without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

The incident took place on Saturday 24 May this year, at just after 9pm, on the A14 at Newmarket. Officers on patrol observed a Peugeot 207 car being driven erratically and stopped the vehicle.

The driver, Edematie, failed a roadside breath test and was found to have 124 micrograms per 100ml of breath, (the legal limit is 35 micrograms) Further checks revealed that no valid motor insurance was present and the driver had no current UK driving licence. Two children were also travelling in the vehicle at the time.

Edematie was arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre where he failed a further breath test providing a sample of 124 micrograms of alcohol in 100 ml of breath.

In addition to being sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, he was also disqualified from driving for 36 months (this could be reduced by 36 weeks on completion of a Government approved course), given a rehabilitation activity requirement and has to pay a victim surcharge of £154, plus £85 in costs.
