New leisure and sports facilities could soon be built in Stowmarket with new funding set to be agreed by the council next month.

The cash will be used by Mid Suffolk District Council to develop the plans, which would use land around Stowmarket High School and Chilton Fields.

The project would see older sporting and leisure facilities on the sites replaced with more modern alternatives.

Early plans include a 4g football pitch and a multi-use 2g pitch, along with a mini athletics track.

There will also be a multi use games area, indoor sports courts, a cricket square and nets and a new 'wellbeing hub'.

Parking in the Chilton Fields area could also be renovated and extended.

The proposals are being developed as a collaboration betwenn the County, District and Town councils, as well as Stowmarket High School, Active Suffolk and Sport England.

Councillor Harry Richardson, from Mid Suffolk District Council, said:

“This project will allow us to provide a holistic approach to sport, health and wellbeing in Stowmarket.

"Given the existing strong relationships with partners and stakeholders, helping those sports to develop and create stronger partnerships to grow wellbeing outcomes and meet Mid Suffolk District Councils ambition to create great communities with bright & healthy futures that everyone is proud to call home and help.”

Dave Lee-Allan, headteacher, Stowmarket High School said:

“Stowmarket High School is fundamentally committed to working with our strategic partners in Mid Suffolk, with Suffolk County Council and all the other sports and wellbeing organisations to provide an exceptional range of facilities for the students and communities of Stowmarket.

"We are very excited about what the future can offer and believe that this project highlights the exceptional ambition that will well serve the growing Stowmarket population.”
