Roads 'well prepared' for busy period across East of England
Almost all roadworks have been lifted during the festive period
Highways officials across the East say they're ready to deal with one of the busiest times of the year on our roads.
Almost all roadworks on our major routes - including the A11, A14, A47 and M11 - have been lifted.
It's already turned out to be a record period on our roads this year, as the AA predicted December 20 would see 23.7 million people using them.
"We're well prepared in terms of lifting all the roadworks that we can," Heather Openshaw, head of service delivery for the Eastern region at National Highways, said.
"We have a dedicated traffic officer service that continues to patrol our major routes and we have a fully resourced team standing by ready to deal with any incidents as quickly and efficiently as we can."
National Highways say 99% of roadworks in the East of England have been removed for the Christmas-New Year period.
Ms Openshaw has this advice for any motorists taking to the roads, such as checking your tyres before setting off.
"Check the traffic reports where you're going, but importantly check your vehicles so make sure all of your fluids - the fuel, oil, screenwash - are at sufficient levels and take rests (after long journeys)," she added.
"One in five winter breakdowns are caused by tyre issues and weather conditions can change even whilst you're on a journey, so make sure you've got some food, drink and blankets in the vehicle should you need them."
