A man has been jailed for 54 months, after a stabbed a stranger in Bury St Edmunds.

54 year old Stephen Bryne, of Hodson Close, admitted to possessing a knife in a public place and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

It comes after an incident at around 10:25pm on June 14 this year, when a woman in her 50s was walking her dog in the St Olaves Road area.

She was approached by Bryne, who stabbed her in the lower back. She wasn't seriously injured.

Byrne was arrested nearby soon after, admitting to officers that he'd been drinking for much of the day.

DI Stuart Dolan-Allen of Suffolk Constabulary said: “This was an unprovoked and random attack which so easily could have led to a fatal conclusion.

“The victim fortunately did not suffer serious injury, however this would have been a terrifying ordeal and the psychological impact should not be underestimated.

“Knife crime can have devastating consequences and I hope the sentencing shows that violence will not be tolerated in our communities and we will take robust action on those responsible.”
