A driver in his 80s has died after a crash involving two cars
A man in his 80s has died following a crash involving two cars on the A12 in Saxmundham.
Police said they were called to the scene near the junction with the B1119 Rendham Road by the East of England Ambulance Service just before 2pm yesterday (4 December).
The collision involved a grey Nissan Almera and a red Mazda.
The driver of the Almera was the sole occupant of the car and, despite efforts by medical personnel, he was declared dead at the scene.
Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service also attended the crash to rescue two passengers from the Mazda.
They, alongside the Mazda’s driver, were taken to hospital in an ambulance, with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.
Following the crash, a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after failing a roadside drug test.
He is currently being questioned by police at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
The A12 remains closed in both directions while police investigations continue.
Officers are asking witnesses to come forward or to review dashcam footage if anyone was driving in the area earlier in the day.
