Firefighters tackle large compost fire in Red Lodge
The fire is being left to burn and it could carry on for 'quite some time' according to Suffolk Fire and Rescue
A compost fire that broke out in Suffolk over the weekend is going to be left to burn.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue say they were called out to a compost transfer site at The Carrops in Red Lodge at around midday on Saturday (5 April). At its peak there was six fire engines in attendance.
A joint decision with the Environment Agency was made to allow the fire to be managed as a controlled burn as 'there are limited surrounding risks and the smoke is coming from organic matter' which is a 'better environmental option due to the site’s proximity to the River Kennett and wanting to avoid water runoff from the site.' A fire spokesperson added.
The fire is expected to burn for 'quite some time' so Suffolk Fire and Rescue and Suffolk Police will continue to monitor the incident.
