Police tell us a suspected burglar who climbed onto the roof of a building in Ipswich has been arrested.

Officers were called to Butter Market at approximately 4:35am yesterday, Thursday 16 May, to reports of a burglary in progress at Carat’s Jewellers, after the alarm had been activated.

A further call reported that the male suspect had climbed onto the roof of the premises and was climbing over several other businesses.

A number of emergency services were called to the area, including police, negotiators, ambulance personnel and Suffolk Fire and Rescue.

A number of surrounding roads were cordoned off for public safety.

After nine hours the situation was safely resolved, shortly before 1:40pm, and all road restrictions were lifted.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary and initially taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution.

He was discharged from hospital yesterday evening and has now been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains.
