Plans for a new Ipswich GP surgery progress
It would have 29 clinic rooms, 11 nurse rooms and a minor operating suite
Plans for a new Ipswich GP surgery expected to cost £7.75 million over the next three years have moved forward.
The NHS has approved the outline business case for a GP surgery on the former Tooks Road bakery site and its planning application is expected to be decided next month.
Ipswich Borough Council’s cabinet also decided on Tuesday to tender for a lead consultant to manage construction.
Cllr Martin Cook, portfolio holder for resources, said at the cabinet meeting: “When it is complete, this will be one of the largest surgeries in the Ipswich area.
“I am pleased to say that the outline business case has been approved by the NHS and we have submitted the planning application for the scheme.
“We are expecting to receive tender returns for the lead consultant in the design team by the end of next month.”
Plans are for a 1,150 square-metre two-storey surgery with 29 clinic rooms, 11 nurse rooms and a minor operating suite. The council submitted its planning application last November.
According to current budgets, the surgery will have cost £250,000 this financial year, next financial year the cost will be £1.25 million, in 2024/25 it will be £5.5 million and in 2025/26 it will be £1 million.
Work is projected to start on site in 2024 and be finished in 2025. Surgeries on Deben Road and Chesterfield Drive are expected to close once the Tooks GP surgery is open.
