Iconic Lloyds building in Ipswich could become boutique hotel under new plan
The Lloyds building could be transformed into extra offices, homes, or a boutique hotel after being bought by Ipswich Council
One of the most recognisable buildings in Ipswich town centre is set to be brought back into full use.
The Lloyds building, which was built in the late 1800s, has been bought up by the Ipswich Borough council who are looking into how to use unused parts of the property.
Its only tenant is currently its namesake, the high street bank, but council say it could be refurbished into office space, homes or a boutique hotel.
Approximately 22,000 square feet of space is currently available for use and there are no plans for the Lloyds branch inside the building to close.
Councillor Neil MacDonald, Ipswich Borough Council Leader said:
“The Lloyds bank building is a prominent feature on the Cornhill, and I'm pleased that it’s now in Council ownership."
"We aim to turn the Cornhill into the beating heart of Ipswich, and this historical building alongside other key listed buildings such as the old Post Office and the Town Hall, will create spaces for socialising, dining, and entertaining.
"We will ensure that the Lloyds building makes a great contribution to the Cornhill and a town centre which is vibrant, enjoyable, clean, safe, and inclusive for everyone.”
