Tree planting campaign launches in Suffolk for Queen's Jubilee
The Queen's Green Canopy aims to leave a lasting legacy to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022
The Queen's Green Canopy, a tree planting and preservation campaign, has been launched in Suffolk.
It aims to create a lasting legacy for future generations and mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee next year.
Across Suffolk, partner organisations are working together to preserve and enhance the existing woodland across the county, while increasing the canopy cover and access to green spaces.
The Queen's Green Canopy includes Tree Wardens who will work with communities and parish councils to link up existing woodland with woodland walkways and hedgerows.
It's hoped people across the county will be able to enjoy the benefits of the campaign.
Suffolk Deputy Lieutenant and spokesperson for the county's Green Canopy, Diana Hunt, said:
"People who would benefit most from the green environment, and the benefits that brings for physical and mental health, those people are actually the ones who are denied access to the green environment. One of the main objects of this exercise is to enlarge the green environment so as many people as possible will benefit.
"We think that planting a tree or going out into the countryside and caring for trees might actually make people feel like they are doing something. They might feel a little bit better and improve the environment for future generations.
"Trees can be hugely helpful, obviously it's not going to be the golden bullet that sorts out all the environment problems, but it's something we as individuals can take part in and actually contribute to the legacy which we are leaving for our children and grandchildren."
Suffolk's ambition is to plant or preserve a tree for every residents of the county for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
