Suffolk police urge drivers to stay prepared in cold weather
We're being reminded to take it slow, carry warm clothing and fully defrost the car to stay safe on the roads
As the cold snap continues, drivers in Suffolk are being advised to get prepared.
Suffolk Roads & Armed Policing Inspector, Gary Miller, says carrying warm clothing, taking your time and fully defrosting the car are all measures we should be taking to stay safe on the roads.
Today (Friday 19th January) is set to be another chilly day, with temperatures not rising too far above freezing - and with another frost expected overnight.
With this in mind, Inspector Gary Miller has this advice for the people of Suffolk:
"People need to be aware that road conditions will be poorer in really cold conditions.
"You only have to walk out your house in the morning and see the frost on the windscreen of your car to know that it's cold and therefore there may be frost and ice on the road which would affect the handling of the car - and stopping distances.
"So the first thing people need to do is make sure that they have a clear windscreen and windows when they leave home in the mornings, and they also need to make sure they've got suitable clothing in case the vehicle breaks down.
"It's about taking your time and slowing your driving down to take account of what could be icy conditions on the roads.
"We rely on the fact that the roads will be gritted, but there's some roads that won't be overnight.
"Certainly some of our rural roads won't be, and so people need to be careful.
"So making sure your lights work and making sure that your vehicle's in good condition, making sure you have things like washer fluid in your washer bottle.
"All of those basic things you need to check to make sure that you get where you need to get in good condition."
