Ipswich has welcomed a piece of maritime history this week as the Nao Santa Maria, a replica of Christopher Columbus’ 15th-century vessel, sailed into Orwell Quay.

The ship is docked at Ipswich Harbour until Sunday 7th September, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to step aboard a floating museum that commemorates the legendary 1492 voyage that led to Columbus discovering the Americas.

The Nao Santa Maria is inviting guests to explore its decks, learn about life at sea during the Age of Discovery, and experience a recreation of the conditions faced by Columbus and his crew.

The ship features four masts, over 300 square metres of sail, and more than three kilometres of rope, all designed to replicate the original.

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said:

“We are delighted to welcome the Nao Santa Maria to Ipswich for its five-day stay. This unique vessel offers a fascinating experience for all ages. It promises to be a stunning spectacle on Orwell Quay, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the history of the Santa Maria and Christopher Columbus.”

An official opening ceremony took place on Wednesday 3rd September, attended by the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, Councillor MacDonald and other invited guests. They will be welcomed aboard by the captain and given a guided tour before the ship opens to the public.
