Changes to Ipswich bus fares will 'focus on rewarding customer loyalty'

Discounted travel will be available for regular travellers

Customers using Ipswich Buses will see a change in some of the operator’s fares from 20 April with a 'more simplified fare structure' and a 'focus on rewarding customer loyalty.'

Discounted travel will be available for regular travellers, allowing them to continue to buy ‘bulk’ travel at a reduced ‘per journey’ rate.

Use of the Ipswich Buses App will continue to offer reductions in fares for the family ticket and 10-journey product to encourage use of the App.

The removal of government funding of the £2.00 National Bus Fare Cap earlier this year and increases in operating costs such as labour and taxation have meant a revision of fares.

The council say "to ensure Ipswich Buses remain competitive and offer customers value for money, an analysis of local and national operators’ fares was carried out."

Singles fares will increase from £2.00 to £2.30 (adult) and from £1.40 to £1.70 (under 20s).

However, we're told this is no more than the bus operator’s maximum adult single fare before the £2.00 National Bus Fare Cap was implemented in January 2023.

Return tickets will be withdrawn and replaced with a further reduced day ticket price from £4.50 to £4.40 (adult) and £3.30 to £3.00 (under 20s).

Dan Bassett, Managing Director at Ipswich Buses, says:

“We understand the cost of living continues to be challenging for many people, and whilst we have had to make alterations to our fares, including increasing several prices, we have tried hard to maintain affordability and offer value for money for our customers.

The removal of return tickets and adult transfer tickets, replacing them with discounted day tickets further simplify our fare structure, making ticketing easier to understand and buses easier to use.

We will continue to offer ‘on the day’ bus fares which are the lowest and best value in the region and some of the lowest and best value fares in the country.”
