Carlton Colville man facing jail after being convicted of attempted murder
Ryan Leggett attacked his partner with knives at their home - leaving her with stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.
A 35-year-old man from Carlton Colville has been convicted of attempted murder, following an attack on his partner last year.
Ryan Leggett, of Lowestoft Road, was found guilty at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday (18 September) following a week-long trial.
Leggett had previously pleaded guilty to unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; and threatening a person with a blade in a private place; but had denied the charge of attempted murder.
The attack occurred between 1am and 2am on Saturday 23 November, when the victim – a woman aged in her 30s - returned home from work earlier than expected to find Leggett in their bed naked with another man who was half naked.
She then spotted a plate with white powder - which she suspected to be cocaine - and a rolled-up note in the room.
They subsequently argued about what had happened and whilst in the kitchen he took out a knife and held it to her neck.
The victim went upstairs, grabbing her phone on the way, and entered a bedroom where she messaged a friend to tell her what had happened.
Shortly after, Leggett entered the bedroom carrying a knife in each hand and while the victim was lying on the bed he attacked her, stabbing her numerous times. Leggett then left the house locking the victim in, but the alarm was raised with a neighbour and the emergency services were called.
The victim sustained eight stab wounds, including two to the chest which caused a fractured rib and punctured lung. Another wound to the abdomen caused internal bleeding and damage to her liver.
Leggett was arrested at 7pm in the evening on 23 November, after he called police to hand himself in. He was charged on 25 November and made his first court appearance later that day.
The jury found Leggett guilty of attempted murder by a unanimous verdict and he has been remanded in custody pending a sentencing hearing to be held on Friday 31 October.
