Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras could soon be popping up around Suffolk to help with moving traffic offences.

It comes after the Department for Transport announced in December 2021 that Local Transport Authorities outside of London could apply for the powers to enforce offences.

The powers would help with a number of contraventions, including bus gates, box junctions, prohibition of motor vehicles, one-way carriageways, mandatory turns and similar types of enforcement.

Suffolk County Council are submitting applications this week to the cabinet for 4 pilot sites including 3 roads where motor vehicles are prohibited and 1 bus gate site between Ipswich and Claydon.

Councillor Paul West said:

"It will help ease congestion to allow public transport to flow more freely and reach its destination quicker than is currently the case because it's hampered by people breaching the prohibition."

With fines expected to be around ÂŁ60-ÂŁ70 Paul told us what that money would be used for moving forward:

"Paying for the scheme, rolling out the scheme for other sites, or ring fencing the money and using it to improve transport and ease transport congestion in and around Suffolk."

The application is now due to be put before the cabinet on Tuesday. (8/11)
