Suffolk Fire and Rescue are asking people in Suffolk to be safe and prepared with a week to go until bonfire night.

They are reminding people of the dangers that accompany the festivities as they have seen the number of calls rise on Guy Fawkes night

Per Middleton from Suffolk Fire and Rescue told us they often see an increase in calls on bonfire night and this is typically due to "people trying to do their own bonfires or their own displays at home"

He said there are ways of doing it safely, but if it does go wrong that's when they are called to help with the "damage and problems" and so going to an organised event has less chance of danger because they "obviously have to do some precautions or take certain precautions to hold the events to make sure that it's safe so they have appropriate marshals and people like that."

One thing he really wanted to make clear was do not use liquid accelerants!

"We've seen some horrific injuries where the vapour can get onto people's skin or onto their clothing, and that can be absolutely catastrophic.

"So however tempting it may be, if the woods got wet or something like that, we would ask people just to never do that."

Sparklers

Per also warned us of the dangers of sparklers, especially for younger children.

He asks that they are used "appropriately" for "children to wear gloves and hold then (the sparklers) at arms length"

He explained that one of "the difficulties is children like to run around, they get very excited. .. but actually they're extremely dangerous.

"If you pick up a sparkler or a touch of sparkler where it's burning, you can get significant burns.

"So certainly we'd advise the young children to be accompanied by adults and to make sure they're not running around.

He also said if you drop a sparkler, don't try to pick it up, let it burn out."

As well as suggesting having a bucket of water nearby, so they're no longer hot, and there is no risk of accidents, such as pets standing on them.

Animals

Per also wants people to be aware of the impact Bonfire night has on animals, reminding us it can be "really stressful for animals, for pet owners and people that own livestock." and asks people to be considerate.

"If you are living near a place where you know there's a lot of animals there, especially farm animals, don't let our fireworks near there, because it would really scare them and that can cause damage and trauma that's not needed."

He then went on to explain how smoke can also cause damage as it "can travel a long way. It can be quite antisocial. It can cause quite damaging effects to health."

He explained that smoke can even cause accidents on roads.
