Paul Jones opens up about his Rolling Stones secret

Former Manfred Mann frontman Paul Jones joined Ken Bruce on Greatest Hits Radio for Golden Years and opened up about the 1960s, Manfred Mann and a Rolling Stones secret. Later this year, Paul will go on what he described as, "the big tour", and he also confirmed it would include many of Manfred Mann's hits from the 60s.
The singer chose three songs from his Golden Year of 1964, including songs by The Exciters' 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy', Stevie Wonder and The Rolling Stones.
The Rolling Stones secret
During the chat, Paul shocked Ken by revealing a secret. Explaining further, Paul said: "I used to be friends with Brian Jones and Brian, in 1962, said to me, 'I'm forming a band, do you want to be my singer?', and I turned it down...
"The reason I turned it down was basically I thought he was being ridiculously optimistic. He said, 'I'm going to become rich and famous!', and I said, 'playing the blues, get rich and famous? Don't be ridiculous.' So I turned him down, and he got Mick Jagger!
"And of course they got a Number 1 record out of a straight forward blues, which was a rarity even then, it's even rarer now."
Despite not having success as part of The Rolling Stones, Paul did have success with Manfred Mann, The Blues Band and as a solo artist. One of Manfred Mann's biggest songs was 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy', which became a Number 1 hit in the UK.
'Do Wah Diddy Diddy'
Speaking to Ken, he told how Manfred Mann's version of 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' came about. The song was originally released by The Exciters in 1963, being released a year later by Manfred Mann, when Paul was in the group.

He told Ken: "Lots of our things were covers of records made by girl vocal groups and the girl vocal group in this case was The Exciters and Brenda Reid was the lead singer and her husband Herb was guitarist. And I thought, oh my goodness, what a song!
"I bought it and played it to the guys and we learnt it and we were doing a session with our producer John Burgess one afternoon and we'd done the three required songs and we still had about 25 minutes of (studio) time left. And he said, 'have you got anything else?' and we said, 'well we've got this one that we've been playing and we played him 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' and he said 'that a hit'. And I said, 'I know!'"
