Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash involving four cars on the M56.

The motorway was closed at around 06:00BST on Monday morning (September 23) with long queues reported near J12 Runcorn.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue confirmed two people had been "released" from the vehicles and handed over the paramedics.

In a statement, North West Motorway Police said: "Fire and ambulance were called to the scene and two people were taken to hospital, their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"Two lanes were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident. The closures were lifted shortly after 8am."

National Highways reported delays of around 30 minutes, with queues stretching back three miles.
