Two jailed after dad and son threatened with knives in Newcastle
Yusuf Kose and Garry Lawton 'caused significant distress to the victims'
Two men have been jailed after threatening a father and son with knives in Newcastle-under-Lyme last year.
Yusuf Kose, aged 18, of Meadow Lane, Newcastle, was sentenced to 18-months at a young offenders institution at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday (21 March) after admitting threatening a person with a blade in a public place, breach of a criminal behaviour order and theft.
Garry Lawton, aged 20, of Brickhouse Street, Burslem, was jailed for 12 months after also pleading guilty to making threats with a knife and theft.
The court heard how Kose and Lawton flagged down a vehicle on Douglas Avenue in Newcastle, on 3 May 2021, purporting to need help.
The occupants of the vehicle, who pulled over to help, were threatened with a knife, before the offenders stole a wallet - containing approximately £200.
PC Adam Coomer, the officer in charge of the case, said: “Kose and Lawton premediated this theft and caused significant distress to the victims and the wider community in this case.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to the residents in the area who assisted police with extensive door to door enquiries and helped to collate CCTV leads.
“These men were seen to be in possession of offensive weapons and caused significant alarm within the area.
“I am happy that justice has been served and would like to reiterate that the force will take all of the necessary steps to apprehend offenders who use violence for criminal gain.”
At the same court hearing, Lawton was also handed a six-year sentence to run concurrently after also admitting unrelated charges of assault with intent to rob and robbery, following an incident which took place in August 2019.
