'Enjoy it safely' - Staffordshire leaders urge caution ahead of Euro 2020 final
People are being asked to follow Covid rules at places like pubs and bars
‘Enjoy the day but enjoy it safely’ is the message to football fans ahead of England’s big match on Sunday.
Staffordshire has seen case rates of Covid-19 rise across the county, with areas such as Tamworth now among the highest in the country. Many positive cases have been linked to people gathering to watch England games as they’ve progressed through Euro 2020.
People are being asked to continue following the rules and social distancing guidance in place at licensed premises to minimise the risk of transmission. Fans heading out to watch the game are also encouraged to check they’re not carrying the virus by taking a rapid test before they go. Hospitality settings are also being urged to comply with Covid-19 regulations to host customers safely and minimise the risk of transmission.
Cabinet Support Member for Public Health and Integrated Care, Dr Johnny McMahon, said: “While the England players are doing their bit on the pitch, the fans can do their bit for Staffordshire off it. This means enjoying the day but enjoying it safely and responsibly.
“With remaining restrictions due to lift from the 19 July, it’s really important we all work together to keep case rates down to allow as many people to get vaccinated as possible.
“Whether you’re watching the final in the pub or at home with friends, please follow all the guidance around gathering limits and social distancing. If you are going out to watch, please get tested before you go and wear a face covering where necessary. This will help reduce any spike in cases we may see from this final game of the tournament.”
