University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has announced that Dr Matthew Lewis has been appointed as its new medical director.

Matthew joins UHNM from Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust where he is Executive Medical Director and works as gastroenterologist in the out-patient and endoscopy departments.

He was a consultant in general medicine and gastroenterology at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals from 2002 to 2018, where he also worked as Group Director for Medicine and Emergency Care.

Matthew carried out his clinical training in Manchester and north-west England. He has a Masters in medical leadership from Warwick University, which has given him an insight into the opportunities afforded by understanding different approaches to health care across the United Kingdom and overseas. He is also a part-time Visiting Fellow at the King’s Fund.

A start date will be confirmed shortly but is expected to be around late September.

Matthew said: "I am delighted to be joining the UHNM team and I look forward to working with my new colleagues to provide the highest quality care for our patients."

Tracy Bullock, UHNM chief executive added: "Matthew joins us with a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles and is driven by improving the quality, safety and experience of care for patients.

"I am extremely pleased to have appointed Matthew to this key role and very much look forward to welcoming him to the team in the autumn."
