A woman has been jailed after admitting that she caused the death of a teenage girl in Staffordshire.

Officers were first alerted to an incident taking place on the B5030 heading toward Rocester on August 12th, 2023.

It was determined that the driver of a car - 61-year-old Sarah Irvine - had been driving when she drifted onto the other side of the road.

As a result of this, the car she was driving collided with another car - that had been carrying the victims - head on.

A number of witnesses saw the incident and ran to help as those involved in the crash were left seriously injured.

Following the crash, emergency services were called to the scene - where they determined that 15-year-old Alice Beardmore, who had been a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alice's father Terry was also left with serious injuries, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Irvine pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a pre-trial hearing.

Further evidence, however, revealed that Irvine's blood had been found to contain traces of the prescription drug diazepam, though this was below the legal limit.

Irvine was handed a 27-month-jail sentence after her plea at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday (April 17th).

Speaking on the case, PC Broxton-Straw from Staffordshire Police said: "Irvine chose to drive on that morning, which led to the horrific collision of an innocent family. It caused the death of a child and serious injury to her father.

“I want to thank all the witnesses who came forward and provided evidence to assist the investigation and particularly the family of Alice who have waited patiently for justice throughout this difficult time.”
