Rare coin created by a Newcastle-under-Lyme specialists is snapped up
It was created to mark last month's coronation
An ultra-rare one kilo 24-carat solid gold coin, minted on the day of the Coronation, has been sold by UK coin specialist.
All three minted have been snapped up by avid collectors following nationwide celebrations last month to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey.
Measuring 100mm in diameter and 1kg in weight, the coins have been struck in 24-carat gold.
The rare double header coin is the first in history to feature a reigning King and Queen and the first ever depicting Queen Camilla.
Hattons of London Managing Director Simon Mellinger said: “The Coronation of King Charles III was a remarkable moment in our history and an event that was watched the world over.
“Some truly exceptional coins were proposed for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, but given how rarely permission has ever been granted for multiple portraits on gold sovereigns, we felt truly honoured that these coins were approved by Buckingham Palace.
“Double portrait sovereigns are extremely rare, making this range a true world’s first and that coupled with the fact that they were minted on the very day that King Charles was crowned is what makes these rare kilo coins even more extraordinary."
