People across Stoke-on-Trent are being urged to 'act responsibly' this Mother's Day, and not to give coronavirus a chance to spread.

It's feared people breaking lockdown restrictions to spend time with parents could result in another spike in cases in the city.

At the moment, Stoke-on-Trent's Covid-19 infection rate is the highest in the West Midlands, at around 103.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Councillor Abi Brown said: "I think at the moment we would urge people to abide by the guidance. The best way to speak to your mum this Sunday is on the phone, Facetime, or send her a card. Say you're looking forward to seeing her, hopefully, in a few months time

"We've seen a loosening of restrictions over the last week including children going back to schools and a loosening of who we're allowed to see outdoors, but that isn't an invitation for us all to go wild.

"There can be few things worse than going to see your mum, you thought it would be okay, and you actually gave her Covid-19.

"All it will take is for you to give Covid-19 to somebody with an underlying health issue or an older person, or indeed somebody who just doesn't deal with it as well as you do.

"You just have to multiply that a few times over to send us back to where we were.

"We just ask people to remain vigilant and to do the right thing."
