Organisers of the IRONMAN race in Staffordshire have released a statement on social media to say they are "deeply saddened to confirm the death of a race participant".

IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire saw around 3,000 athletes compete in a 70.3 mile race.

The event involved a 1.2-mile swim at Chasewater Country Park, followed by a 56-mile bike through the Staffordshire countryside and Cannock Chase, finishing with a 13.1-mile run ending in Stafford town centre.

During the swim portion of the race, safety personnel were alerted to an athlete requiring immediate medical attention.

The athlete was attended to by the on-site medical team before being transported to a nearby hospital where the athlete sadly passed.

IRONMAN have written on Facebook:

During the swim portion of the race, safety personnel were alerted to an athlete requiring immediate medical attention. The athlete was attended to by the on-site medical team before being transported to a nearby hospital where the athlete sadly passed.

"We share our greatest sympathy with the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time. We thank the safety personnel and medical staff who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical support."

This year’s event marked the first full capacity race since 2019, following disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic which led to event cancellation in 2020.
