Works to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians on busy Newcastle route near completion
Overnight road closures are scheduled to take place from Monday
Overnight road closures are scheduled to take place on a main road in Newcastle next week as a cycle and pedestrian improvement scheme nears completion.
The 17-week scheme started in June on the A52 George Street and includes alterations to two existing crossings. Next week night-time work will enable road resurfacing, new road marking installation and traffic signal modifications.
A full closure will be in place each weekday night between 7pm and 7am from Monday October 24 until Friday October 28, on the section between the city council boundary and the junction with the A52 Brunswick Street.
Only emergency vehicles and those accessing properties will be allowed access. A signed diversion will be in place and if works are completed early, the closures will be lifted at the end of the week.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said:
“This scheme will be a great improvement to cyclists and pedestrians, providing a continual link from Newcastle into Stoke-on-Trent. Most importantly it will increase safety which is a top priority to us.
“As it nears completion, the team needs to carry out essential surfacing and final completion works, and so these overnight closures are necessary. We’d like to thank people for their patience and ask to allow additional time if planning to travel in the area during the closure periods.”
