A murder investigation has been launched after an inmate died after being stabbed at a prison in Staffordshire.

Police say they were called to HMP Dovegate, Draycott-in-the-Clay, at around 9am on Saturday.

A man in his 40s sustained serious knife wounds, and was rushed to hospital for treatment. He later died.

A 46-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. He has been released on bail as we continue to investigate.

In a statement, Staffordshire Police said: "We’ve launched a murder investigation following the death of a prisoner in Staffordshire.

"Shortly after 9am on Saturday (13 July), we were called to HMP Dovegate, Draycott-in-the-Clay, after a prisoner was stabbed.

"The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

"Sadly, he died as a result of his injuries.

"A 46-year-old man, of HMP Dovegate, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has been released on bail as we continue to investigate.

"Specially-trained officers are continuing to support the man’s family at this difficult time."
