Man jailed for manslaughter of retired priest in Stafford
The 33 year-old, from Stafford, has been sent to prison for seven years and one month
A man has been jailed after pleading guilty to manslaughter of a retired priest in Stafford, on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Joseph David Phillips, 33, of Stafford, was sentenced to seven years and one month imprisonment for the manslaughter of Father Oliver Kemp at Stafford Crown Court yesterday.
Phillips pleaded guilty on 7 July at Stafford Crown Court to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Police were called to reports of an assault shortly before 8pm on 17 February 2021 at the County Hospital. Sadly, the victim, Oliver Kemp, who was 82-years-old and from Stone, died in hospital on 23 February as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Cheryl Hannan, said: "This was a tragic incident for all involved. Our thoughts remain with those that knew and loved Father Kemp."
