A man has been jailed after admitting sexually assaulting a woman in East Staffordshire last year.

Vasil Georgiev, aged 37, of Swadlincote, was sentenced to four years behind bars at Stafford Crown Court after pleading guilty to sexual assault at an earlier hearing.

The court heard how Georgiev claimed to be a taxi driver whilst driving a Honda Jazz around Burton-on-Trent in August 2022 when the unsuspecting victim got inside the vehicle.

She was later sexually assaulted in the car.

Georgiev was arrested on the same day and questioned in custody. He later admitted his offending in court.

He was also ordered to pay £190 in surcharge costs.

Detective Inspector Cathryn Holland, who dealt with the case, said: “I want to thank the victim for her exceptional bravery in supporting this investigation and making sure Georgiev faces justice.

“We want victims of sexual assault to know that they can speak to specially-trained officers in confidence who will do everything possible to put those responsible behind bars.”
